Global Research Internship Program for Young Scientists (GripS)

Initiated by Zhejiang University in collaboration with Fudan University, the University of Science and Technology of China, and Nanjing University, the Global Research Internship Program for Young Scientists (GripS) is dedicated to attracting outstanding students worldwide to conduct scientific research practices in China. Through joint research internships in top laboratories, the program aims to promote in-depth exchanges and cooperation between domestic and international students, further enhancing the international reputation and influence of universities in the Yangtze River Delta region.

In the summer of 2024, 40 outstanding students from around the world gathered at Fudan University for the first GripS program. The GripS Summer School on Neuroscience and Neurotechnology hosted by Fudan's Institute for Brain Intelligent Science and Technology was the largest exchange project within GripS, attracting 11 international students from global top universities including the University of Cambridge, the University of Sydney, and the University of Buenos Aires, as well as 3 Chinese students from Fudan University. Together, they embarked on an academic journey to explore the interdisciplinary fields of brain science, big data, and artificial intelligence. By organizing GripS Summer School activities, we have built a high-level international academic exchange platform for young scholars, effectively promoting the popularization, dissemination, and advancement of brain-inspired intelligent technology.

This year, the program has recruited 11 international students from first-class universities in countries such as the UK, the US, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Greece, Brazil, Malaysia, and Vietnam. It will continue the characteristic research summer camp model of lectures + academic seminars + laboratory internships to attract and cultivate more outstanding young scholars with international perspectives and research potential.

Time and Venue

The summer school will be held at the Zhangjiang Campus of Fudan University from June 23 to July 28, 2025.

During weekdays: Attend theme lectures by professors in the morning and participate in laboratory project practices in the afternoon.
Weekends: Opportunities to visit enterprises or tour surrounding cities with international students.

Schedule Highlights

July 23: Visit the Brain-Inspired Building, Zhangjiang International Brain Imaging Center, etc.
First Week (June 24–27):
Lecturer: Prof. Andreas Heinz
- What are mental disorders and how are they classified?
- Do neurobiological findings distinguish between depression and bad mood?
- Neurobiology of schizophrenia
- Neurobiology of addiction
Second Week (June 30–July 4): Mini-project in laboratories. Participants will be divided into four groups, each led by a PhD student from the Institute for Brain Intelligent Science and Technology, to conduct research, discussions, and practical studies on specific topics, and jointly complete a mini-project report in the fifth week.
Third Week (July 7–11):

Topic: Brain Sciences, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence
Fourth Week (July 14–18):
Lecturer: Prof. Marcus Kaiser
Topic: Connectomics and Brain Stimulation
Fifth Week (July 21–25):
Lecturer: Professor from the University of Texas at Dallas
Topic: Brain Sciences, Big Data, and Artificial Intelligence

Program Features

Cutting-edge Leadership and Interdisciplinary Integration
Focused on brain science, the program skillfully integrates big data, artificial intelligence, and related fields. The curriculum design combines theoretical lectures with experimental operations, providing participants with opportunities to comprehensively explore the mysteries of the brain, master big data analysis skills in neuroscience, and use AI for innovative research.
International Expert Lecturers
Renowned scholars from Germany, the UK, and the US are invited to teach 前沿 (frontier) and hotspot topics in related fields in English. Under the guidance of professional research teams, participants will go through research stages including intensive theoretical learning, literature review, experimental design, and data analysis, collaborating closely with team members to unlock the door to cutting-edge scientific research and experience the charm and challenges of scientific inquiry.
Academic Interaction
The program not only offers rich courses but also creates a strong academic atmosphere. During breaks and tea sessions, participants can actively discuss and share insights on topics of interest. This free and open academic environment provides a platform for young participants to showcase themselves and exchange ideas, highly stimulating their inspiration and creativity, and laying a solid foundation for their academic growth and future research careers.

Admission Information

Eligibility: Open to all current students. Undergraduate or master's students from any discipline are welcome to apply, with priority given to those willing to actively participate in and assist with activity organization.
Certificates: Upon completion, participants will receive a program completion certificate and a volunteer certificate.
Fees and Subsidies: Tuition is waived. Accommodation is arranged uniformly, while meals and other expenses are at the participants' own cost.
