5th AEARU Cultural Workshop:
East Asian Cultures and Higher Education: AEARU Workshop
on the Characteristics of Higher Education in East Asia.
Peking University and Tsing Hua University (Hsin chu, Taiwan) will be co-hosting the fifth cultural workshop for members of Association of East Asian Research Universities (AEARU) from November 5-7, 2009 in Beijing. Focusing on the issues of how cultural values and tradition affect the conceptualization and practice of higher education, the workshop aims to gather a group of social scientists who are familiar with East Asian cultures and have been involved with higher education in this region to examine how their respective cultures have influenced university education in their societies. Topics to be covered include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Policies regulating/controlling the operation of universities in East Asian countries and their manifestations in educational practices.
2. Campus culture and how it reflects its sociocultural milieu.
3. Globalization and its impacts on East Asian universities.
We cordially invite faculty members and university administrators from AEARU and other affiliated institutions who are interested in these topics to join us in this workshop/seminar.
Interested persons are invited to submit an abstract (in English) of the paper to be presented and a brief resume before August 15, 2009. Completed papers are due on October 15th. Formal invitations will be issued in the end of August.
Date of Workshop/seminar: November 5-7, 2009.
Venue: Overseas Exchange Center, Peking University, Beijing, P.R. China
Agenda: Registration on November 5th, Paper presentations and discussion session on November 6th. City tour to the Beijing Forbidden City and/or the Great wall will be organized for participants on November 7th.

Travel and Lodging: All participants are expected to pay for their travel to and from Beijing. Peking University and Tsing Hua University, as the host institutions, will be responsible for lodging from November 5th to November 8th (up to 3 nights) and meals during the workshop as all the cost of the day trip.
