Supported by the Graduate School of Fudan University and hosted by the School of Philosophy at Fudan University, Fudan International Summer School of Philosophy 2025 will take place from August 8th to August 16th at Fudan University. The theme of this year’s summer school is “Early Chinese Philosophy in Comparative and Contemporary Perspectives”. Early Chinese Philosophy laid the foundation for traditional Chinese thought, and has exchanged ideas with Western philosophical trends through their encounters since Western modernity. To this day, it continues to provide a steady stream of theoretical resources for diverse comparative studies. The instructors of this summer school are leading scholars in Chinese philosophy from around the world. They will explore a wide range of topics centered on classic texts such as the AnalectsMenciusXunziMoziDaodejingZhuangzi, and Han Feizi. By doing comparative studies among these texts and between the Chinese texts and Western philosophical texts, and by looking at how they answer common human problems, we will show the comparative and contemporary relevance of early Chinese philosophy. All courses in this Summer School will be conducted in English.

Franklin Perkins(方岚生) Professor

Franklin Perkins, Professor of Philosophy and Graduate Chair at the University of Hawai’i at Mānoa and editor of the journal Philosophy East and West. He received his Ph.D. in Philosophy from the Pennsylvania State University. He has previously taught at Vassar College, Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), the University of Chicago, and at DePaul University, where he was also director of the Chinese Studies Program. He is the author of Heaven and Earth are not Humane: The Problem of Evil in Classical Chinese Philosophy (Indiana, 2014), which gives a history of early Chinese philosophy in terms of responses to a growing consensus that the order of nature is not itself ethical. This consensus arose from a version of the problem of evil: the recognition that bad things happen to good people. His most recent book is Doing What You Really Want: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Mengzi (Oxford, 2022). He was also co-editor (with Chenyang Li) of Chinese Metaphysics and Its Problems (Cambridge, 2015). Perkins was originally trained in the history of European Philosophy, particularly the Early Modern Period. He has authored two books on the philosophy of Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz: Leibniz: A Guide for the Perplexed (Bloomsbury, 2007), and Leibniz and China: A Commerce of Light (Cambridge, 2004). His books have been translated into Portuguese, Chinese, and Japanese. His main teaching and research interests are in classical Chinese philosophy, early modern European philosophy, and in the challenges of doing philosophy in a comparative or intercultural context. In the past few years, he has been focused particularly on the philosophical significance of recently excavated Chinese texts that were buried around 300 BCE.
